Professional background
BA (Hons) Architecture.
MSc Environmental Conservation.
Chartered Surveyor.
Chartered Town Planner.
Early career as a Town Planner for the London Borough of Lewisham. Then Group Planner leading Multidisciplinary group of 12 planners for the London Borough of Newham, architects and surveyors, with personal responsibility for developing the Council’s policy for the regeneration of an area of significant social, economic and environmental deprivation.
Joined Redbridge Health Authority as Director of Planning and Estates in 1986 (a Board level appointment) and held a number of senior management and Board level positions within the Health Authority.
Became Chief Executive of Redbridge Health Care in 1991, achieving NHS Trust status in 1993.
Chief Executive of NHS National Services Scotland (NSS) between February 2002 and August 2007 – a large and complex organisation providing a wide variety of expert services, which support healthcare organisations across Scotland.
Acted as Interim Chief Executive of NHS Education for Scotland (NES) between August 2003 and April 2004. NES is a Special NHS Board with responsibility for promoting and commissioning training and education for healthcare professionals throughout Scotland.
