East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust offers a comprehensive service in diabetes and endocrinology.
Diabetes services offered:
- retinal screening programme
- education course, DAFNE (Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating), for Type 1 diabetic patients
- insulin pump service
- Paula Carr diabetes centre.
Patients suitable for pancreas or islet cell transplants are referred to King's College Hospital for assessment for this procedure.
The diabetic department works very closely with the Eastern and Coastal Kent Primary CareTrust to give east Kent patients a seamless service.
Endocrinology services offered
The endocrine services are supported by an endocrine surgeon based at the Kent and Canterbury Hospital who specialises in thyroid, parathyriod and adrenal surgery. Patients who require pituitary surgery are referred to tertiary centres based in London at Kings College and Guys/St Thomas Hospitals. Patients who have undergone surgery are usually referred back to the acute trust for follow up care.
Dieticians
The diabetic department is also supported by Eastern and Coastal Kent Primary Care Trust employed dieticians led by Abi Mogridge. They receive referrals from the diabetic clinics and also provide an inpatient service for diabetic patients that need reinforcement of dietary principles of diabetes. They also provide dietetic clinics in the community.
