Laboratory Medicine

East Kent Hospitals Department of Laboratory Medicine provides services within its hospitals and to GPs and other community services within east Kent.

It processes work from three laboratories facilities, the main at William Harvey Hospital, with smaller units at Kent and Canterbury Hospital, and Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital.

Outpatient and inpatient phlebotomy (blood taking) services are provided by the directorate on all hospital sites, there is an outpatient and GP phlebotomy service at Buckland Hospital, and the Royal Victoria Hospital, and at Newington Road Clinic, Ramsgate.

The directorate consists of five services:

Clinical biochemistry (including immunology), haematology (including blood transfusion), and haemostasis, (collectively referred to as blood sciences); cellular pathology, (which includes andrology, cytology, histology and mortuary), and microbiology, (consisting of bacteriology, mycology and virology).
