Qualified in 1980 from The London Hospital Medical College. Trained in kidney medicine in the Royal Air Force and at Charing Cross Hospital, London. Appointed as Consultant Nephrologist in 1990 and subsequently took up the post of Clinical Director of Renal Medicine at the Kent and Canterbury Hospital in 1995. Chairman, South Thames MSTC in Nephrology, 1996-2002. Chairman, East Kent Hospitals NHS Trust Medical Staff Committee, 2000-2003. Chairman, DGH Nephrologists Society, 2001-2005.
