Medical Director

Responsibilities

Provision of high quality medical advice to support decision making and service developments. Lead accountability for patient safety across the Trust.  Professional leadership to medical staff across the Trust.  As co-head of the Directorate of Clinical Practice, jointly develop all clinical aspects of NHS Plans, particularly clinical governance and effectiveness, PALS, and complaints.  Jointly develop Trust approaches to the development of practical clinical skills, care pathways, research and development and clinical risk management.

History with the Trust

Joined the then Kent and Canterbury Hospitals NHS Trust as Consultant Nephrologist and Clinical Director of Renal Services in April 1995.  Appointed as Medical Director from June 2013. 

Professional background

Qualified from The London Hospital Medical College in 1980.

Completed higher medical training in the Royal Air Force and at the Charing Cross Hospital in London and was appointed as Consultant Physician and Nephrologist to the Royal Air Force in 1990.

Other current activities

Awarded the USA National Kidney Foundation International Distinguished Medal for significant contributions to the field of kidney disease and Honorary Fellowship of the British Renal Society for services to patients with kidney disease.

Clinical Advisor to NICE 2004 to date, currently core member of NICE Standing Committee for guideline updates. Former Chair of a number of NICE clinical practice guidelines in nephrology, the NICE CKD topic expert reference group and the NICE CKD Quality Standards.

 Co-chair Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) CKD guideline group.

 Active researcher in kidney disease with over 100 peer reviewed publications and book chapters.
