Advice from Public Health England on Listeria cases being investigated

11 June 2019

Public Health England (PHE), The Food Standards Agency (FSA), Public Health Wales (PHW), Food Standards Scotland (FSS), Health Protection Scotland (HPS) and a number of local authorities are currently investigating the source of listeria infections linked to pre-packed sandwiches.

Sandwiches and salads linked to the cases have been withdrawn and the supplier, The Good Food Chain, has voluntarily ceased production while the investigation continues. Read more on Public Health England's website

Public health experts advised the Trust of a potential problem with sandwiches containing chicken on Sunday 26 May and we immediately removed all products from this supplier from our hospitals and checked to ensure that all of our own internal food handling policies had been followed.

Although the risk of infection is extremely small, as soon as we were informed of the findings of PHE’s investigation, we ran an exercise to identify any at-risk patients and spoke directly to them. A patient in one of our hospitals was subsequently found to be affected and was immediately treated. No new cases have been found.

Information has been sent to all Doctors in the Trust to make them aware of the situation.
