School children design artwork for QEQM windows

Local primary school children were recently invited to help make the hospital feel more welcoming by designing artwork to brighten the windows at the front of the Accident and Emergency Department at Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital.

Eleven floor-to-ceiling external window panels in the A&E waiting room were in need of updating and local primary schools were asked get involved by running an in-school art competition to replace the previously dated artwork.

Pupils were asked to design something based on local places of interest like Dreamland, our beaches, Ramsgate Harbour, Margate Old Town or around themes on caring for people in hospital - like nurses, caring for grandparents, mums and their babies’, doctors, nurses and ambulances.

The schools then selected pieces of artwork to represent their school on the windows and they were then produced into vinyl panels by Gary Fogg of Project Signs Ltd.

Melissa Blinston, Deputy General Manager for Urgent Care at QEQM Hospital, said: “It was great fun to see all of the really creative designs from the school children coming in. Once the designs were in place, we invited all of the designers with their parents or carers to a special unveiling ceremony hosted by the Trust’s Chair, Nikki Cole.

Each child was presented with a certificate, balloon and a cuddly teddy bear kindly donated by Lisa’s Helium Balloons and Keel Toys Ltd and Serco supported the event with refreshments.

These window displays are a permanent and welcoming new feature to our Accident & Emergency Department.
