New maternity app provides pregnancy information at the touch of a button

An innovative smartphone app developed by clinicians at East Kent Hospitals is providing pregnancy information at the touch of a button for expectant mums and their families.

The MOMA maternity app, which launched this month, has been designed to help expectant mothers and their families through pregnancy and to help them prepare for their big day. It features general information about pregnancy, a confidential appointments calendar, maternity leaflets, important contact numbers, and videos, including a tour of the maternity units.

The app is one of the first in the country and was developed in response to feedback from mums-to-be who told midwives that they wanted the right information, at the right time, at their fingertips. They also said they were less likely to read paper leaflets because they didn’t always carry them when out and about.

Midwifery matron, Jo Olagboyega, worked closely with consultant obstetricians, the midwifery team and new mums to develop the app. It was produced by the Trust’s information and technology team.

Jo said: “We are really pleased to have created this easy-to-use app, which will have great benefits for pregnant women and those close to them.

“MOMA contains a wealth of information, put together by clinicians in consultation with patients, for people to access at the touch of a button.

“The app allows the most up to date information to be accessible from one central place and has many useful elements such as the search and notes function.

“As well as empowering parents-to-be to make informed decisions, contact details for our teams are now in one place which makes it easier for them to be located.

“We are constantly developing the app and I am excited about its next stages and what this will mean for mums to be across east Kent.”
