Mother’s Day can be a very emotional day for parents with babies currently being treated in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Few mother would choose to spend Mothers' Day, or Mothering Sunday as it is more traditionally called, in or visiting a hospital. However, for the mums of our tiniest and often sickest hospital inhabitants there is no choice.
This Mother’s Day, the team from William Harvey Hospital wanted to make sure it was as special as it could be. They set about making homemade cards individually to give to all the mums.
The cards included hand and footprints to help give a moment of joy when the card is opened.
Jo Astbury, Nurse, said: "The idea for the cards this year was spotted online by one of the team; cute butterflies made from the babies' footprints.
"We all agreed that this was perfect, and the whole team put in a huge effort to make sure we finished the butterflies. The cards turned out even better than everyone hoped!
"An enormous thank you to everyone involved."
Two organisations, Bliss and Makey Mamas, also donated dozens of beautifully crocheted and knitted hearts, which this year were tucked inside the cards in an origami parcel called a Menko. Project Linus, a nationwide initiative that makes colourful quilts and other items for NICU babies also delivered another huge batch of gorgeous gifts that were given out to every mother.
