Maternity staff at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Margate can relax in style thanks to a local businessman and the Royal College of Midwives (RCM).

East Kent Hospitals has signed up to the RCM’s Caring for You campaign, pledging to make sure midwives’ health, safety and wellbeing is a priority.

The RCM provided funding to improve staff areas, and Labour Ward Manager Rebecca Tebbutt-Ford was able use it to buy two new sofas, after Thanet Bedz and Sofas’ director Jamie Kight offered a substantial discount.

Leisa Foad, Kingsgate Ward Manager, said the team was hugely grateful for their new furniture.

She said: “The whole team works really hard so it is lovely to be able to give them something to improve their break areas.

“We know that healthy and well-rested midwives and maternity support workers can provide the best care for women and their families so it’s good to be able to invest in these sofas to give them somewhere to relax.”

Mr Kight said he was inspired to help because his two children were born at the QEQM.

He said: “We saw how hard the staff work so it was lovely to be able to give something back to them.

“It’s fantastic to see the team enjoying the sofas and I’m delighted I could help.”
