A father and son duo have raised almost £500 for the children’s ward at Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital in Margate.

Jason and Luke Deacon cycled 300 miles around Thanet during September, and initially hoped to raise £250 for the ward, where 14-year-old Luke was treated after he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. They planned to donate another £250 to Diabetes UK.

But family and friends rallied round and they were able to present a cheque for £460 to the East Kent Hospitals Charity last week, to be spent on items for Rainbow Ward.

Jason said: “The staff who looked after Luke during his five days in hospital were excellent and the after-care we received was second to none.”

Dee Neligan, Fundraising and Development Officer for East Kent Hospitals Charity said: ”We were so impressed by Luke and Jason’s efforts to raise funds for our Child Health campaign, and grateful for their feedback about the care that Luke received.

“We have a number of items that we are hoping to fund on Rainbow Ward and this fundraising will ensure that we can continue to improve and enhance the experience that our child patients have at the QEQM.”

The family are now planning to swim the length of the English Channel in their local pool for diabetes research.
