Harriet's home run raises hundreds for the NHS

A schoolgirl who was inspired by Colonel Tom Moore has raised more than £500 by running laps of her garden.

Harriet Brewer, 10, runs a mile each day to raise money for the NHS – and also makes videos thanking frontline staff working during the coronavirus outbreak.

She dedicated one to her grandmother, Karen Brewer, a clinical skills and learning facilitator at East Kent Hospitals, and another to some of her Trust colleagues.

Dad Michael said: “Colonel Tom has been a huge inspiration to her – she saw what he achieved, and it was like a lightbulb moment that she could do something similar.

“She had already been making posters for the window to say thank you to the NHS. It has really hit home how much the frontline staff are doing at the moment to look after everyone who needs it.”

Harriet, who belongs to her local athletics club, has worked out that 40 laps of her garden add up to one mile, and she gets up at 6.45am to finish her run before starting her home-schooling.

On Fridays she completes an extra two miles.

Michael said: “She has dragged me out there a couple of times as well and we run in opposite directions so we can high-five as we pass.

“She is absolutely determined to do something to help, and raising money is part of that.

“But one of the things that has meant a lot to her is being able to mention the people she knows, like her gran and her aunt, in the videos.

“She really wanted to be able to say thank you to them all.”

Harriet and her sister Etta, seven, were born at the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford but now live in Norfolk and usually attend Thetford Grammar School.
