A running fan will tackle a marathon mostly in her back garden on Saturday in aid of East Kent Hospitals Charity.

Karen Aristocleous was due to take part in a fitness challenge in Scotland this weekend but it was cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Instead she will don fancy dress and run 26 miles around her Herne Bay garden, with an hour on the streets of the town as part of the government’s allowed daily exercise.

The 49 year old said: “I have done many hair-brained things during the past few years but it will be a real privilege to support the NHS in their time of need.

“Many NHS workers are putting themselves in the thick of it and I have great admiration and respect for all of them.

“Many families will be affected by COVID-19 and will have difficult and challenging times ahead. It would give me great pleasure to be able to put a smile on people’s faces by doing something fun, worthwhile and for a good cause.”

Karen will start the challenge in her garden and aims to complete 10 miles before taking to the streets for an hour.

She will then complete the distance in her garden.

She said: “It will not be quick as I only have a small garden but I am up for the challenge!

“I am hoping some 80s music will help keep spirits up.”

Proceeds from her challenge will go to the charity’s appeal to support frontline staff caring for patients with suspected and confirmed COVID-19.

So far more than £7,000 has been raised, and used for items such as snacks for teams who are working long shifts and toiletries so staff can shower before they go home.
