New Critical Care Unit taking shape at William Harvey Hospital

14 June 2021

Some of our sickest patients will benefit from a brand new, state of the art critical care unit currently being built at William Harvey Hospital.

The new two-storey, 24 bed unit, is currently being built next to Kennington and Richard Stevens wards, thanks to a successful bid to secure £14 million national NHS investment.

The foundations and steel frame are now in place, following months of hard work by the build team to prepare the ground.

Sections of the new unit, currently being built in Hull, will start being craned into position later this month.

Jane Kirk Smith, Critical Care Matron at William Harvey Hospital says: “After months of planning it’s so exciting to see our new unit taking shape. We’re working really hard behind the scenes to get everything ready for the new unit to open this autumn.

"Thanks to the many teams involved, helping us improve the experience and facilities for our patients, their loved ones and our staff.”

Dr Mark Snazelle, the Trust’s lead doctor for Critical Care says: “This new unit will be a welcome boost for our team and ensure that we have the best possible environment to care for our most critically ill patients.”

The new unit is being constructed by MTX Contracts for East Kent Hospitals.
