A mum from Ashford is planning a skydive to raise money for Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital.
Sam Flint, who works as gastroenterology service manager for East Kent Hospitals, will take to the skies later this summer and is hoping to raise £450 for the London hospital’s children’s charity.
She said: “I’ve been planning to do a skydive since I was in college but life got in the way so it’s taken me a while.
“A marriage, mortgage, and two kids later now is the right time. But as exhilarating as a skydive is, this isn’t just for me, this is for the wonderful charity that is Great Ormond Street.
“Fortunately, we are blessed with two healthy children but that’s not the case for every parent, and as many as five children a day lose their lives to a rare disease.”
Sam’s young son has a condition called laryngomalacia, where the laryngeal structure is malformed and floppy, causing the airway to block, but has thankfully not suffered any serious effects and has not yet needed treatment.
But the diagnosis opened her eyes to rare conditions and prompted her to decide to raise money.
She said: “I wasn’t even aware of his condition before he was born, which made me think about how many more conditions and diseases there are that people don’t know about.
“I have followed a few stories where children or babies have been so poorly and have unfortunately not survived. I’d like to help as many children as possible get well again and receive top treatment.”
