Single Sided Deafness

Single-Sided Deafness (SSD) is the significant or total loss of hearing in one ear. This type of hearing loss is usually permanent. It can occur at any time during your life and sometimes even overnight. In most cases, it’s caused by unknown reasons, but it can also be due to:

  • Congenital (from birth)
  • Physical damage to the ear
  • Viral or bacterial infections in the inner ear
  • Tumours located in the ear or brain
  • Severe Meniere’s disease 
  • Head trauma
  • Diseases like measles, mumps or meningitis

Challenges of Single Sided Deafness (SSD):

  • Losing directionality of sounds (head shadow effect)
  • Losing localisation of sounds
  • Difficulty in communicating in groups
  • Poor speech perception and clarity

Learning Disability Service

  • We are a learning disability friendly service with a named Learning Disability Champion.
  • We offer a specialist service for adults with complex needs or a learning disability who require a hearing assessment, reassessment or help with their hearing aids and hearing needs.
  • We provide person centred approach from initial assessment to rehabilitation adapted to specific needs.
  • We provide alternatives to conventional hearing aids if needed.
  • We adapt our testing procedures and communication ways to achieve positive result for patients in clinic.
  • We make reasonable adjustments to enable safe and comfortable attendance at our clinics.

Dementia Services

  • We are dementia friendly service with a named Dementia Champion.
  • We prioritise booking dementia patients in our service.
  • We provide alternatives to conventional hearing aids if needed.
  • Hearing aid booklets with pictures and illustrations are provided to each patient and their family/carer for easy access for reference of Hearing aid care, maintenance, service sites and services offered.
  • Hearing aid catchers can be provided to prevent loss of patient’s hearing aids.
  • Communication tactics and counselling families/carers are discussed to improve benefits from their hearing aids and general speech perception.
  • Dementia patients can be provided with spare moulds to avoid delay in providing urgent hearing aid replacement for lost hearing aids.
  • We work closely with wards and Dementia nurses across the Trust providing training for trouble shooting of hearing aids.
  • We provide and supply hearing repair boxes (replacement batteries and earmoulds tubings and instructions) to Dementia wards.
  • We make reasonable adjustments to enable safe and comfortable attendance at our clinics.
