General gynaecology

This service provides the assessment and management / treatment of common gynaecological problems such as prolapse, sterilisation requests, menstrual problems, and pelvic pain.

Your visit will involve a consultation and may proceed to a pelvic examination and if necessary further investigations may be organised. 

General gynaecology clinics are held regularly at all East Kent Hospitals, sites and are run by consultant specialists.

Menstrual assessment clinic

This service is a specialised clinic for the assessment and treatment of menstrual disorders such as heavy and painful periods or irregular bleeding. Clinics are available at Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital, Kent and Canterbury Hospital and William Harvey Hospital and are run by consultant specialists.

Your visit will involve a consultation, and may proceed to a pelvic examination, a pelvic ultrasound scan and if necessary further investigations may be organised. If you have a record of your menstrual pattern from the last six months it is helpful to bring this with you to the clinic.

Urogynaecology

This service is a specialised clinic for the assessment and management of urogynaecological disorders such as urinary frequency, incontinence, or recurrent cystitis. Clinics are available at Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital, Kent and Canterbury Hospital and William Harvey Hospital and are run by a multi-disciplinary team including consultant and nurse specialists.

Your visit will involve a consultation, and may proceed to a pelvic examination and if necessary further investigations may be organised. You may be asked to provide a urinary specimen whilst attending this clinic.

Colposcopy

Colposcopy clinics are for women with abnormal smear results. Colposcopy is an integral part of the NHS Cervical Screening Programme. This programme aims to reduce the number of people who develop invasive cervical cancer and the number of people who die from it. The programme is responsible for a 42% drop in the number of cases of cervical cancer countrywide.

Clinics are available at Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital, Kent and Canterbury HospitalWilliam Harvey Hospital, and Buckland Hospital, and are run by both consultants and nurse specialists.

Your visit will involve a consultation, and will proceed to a colposcopy examination and if necessary further investigations may be organised. The colposcopy will involve an examination similar to a smear test.

A leaflet that provides more detail about the procedure will be sent with the appointment letter.

Rapid access clinic

This clinic provides an assessment for urgent suspected cancer referrals. All patients will be given an appointment within two weeks of receiving the appropriate GP referral.

Your visit will involve a consultation, and may proceed to a pelvic examination, a pelvic ultrasound scan and if necessary further investigations may be organised.

Pelvic pain

This service is a specialised clinic for the assessment and management of pelvic pain.  This may include painful periods, general abdominal pain and pain during intercourse. Clinics are available at Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital, Kent and Canterbury Hospital, and William Harvey Hospital and are run by consultant specialists.

Your visit will involve a consultation, and may proceed to a pelvic examination, a pelvic ultrasound scan and if necessary further investigations may be organised. If you have a record of your menstrual pattern from the last six months it is helpful to bring this with you to the clinic.

Fertility

This service is a specialised clinic for the assessment and management of sub-fertility. Clinics are available at Kent and Canterbury Hospital, and William Harvey Hospital and are run by consultant specialists.

Your visit will involve a consultation, and may proceed to a pelvic examination and if necessary further investigations may be organised. If you have a record of your menstrual pattern from the last six months it is helpful to bring this with you to the clinic. It is also helpful if your partner attends the clinic with you.
