New interventional radiology build underway

Published 16 September 2021

An exciting new state-of-the-art development is underway in the Trust, bringing the latest cutting-edge technology to the interventional radiology (IR) department.

The new development will enhance capabilities in minimally invasive image-guided surgery, enabling IR to treat the sickest patients who do not qualify for conventional surgery – targeting areas deep within the body that otherwise cannot be reached.

Clinical lead for interventional radiology, Dr Rob Kaikini, said: “We have been working towards this expansion for a long time. It is incredibly exciting to see the plans take shape.

“I am very grateful to the Trust for funding this development and feel that we can establish a real centre of excellence in east Kent.”

Some of the treatments to be offered to patients will target cancer, aneurysms, bleeding, blood clots and strokes.

Further to this, new IR teaching and educational opportunities will be made available and there will be a dedicated simulation and education suite with links to the new medical school.

Phase one of the new build is due to be completed in January 2022.
