The Voice Banking Process

Step 1

The person registers with their preferred voice banking provider and ensures they have thee correct recording equipment.

Step 2

An initial calibration/screening test will take place to establish whether the recording environment and microphone are suitable.

Step 3

If the test recordings are suitable, the person can continue to record the remaining phrases. If not, the process may need repeating.

Step 4

Payment is arranged.

Step 5

The person can download their voice onto a communication device or a communication app and start using it. A speech and language therapist can help with this.

The MNDA supports people with a confirmed diagnosis of MND to bank their voice. They loan equipment and can fund voice banking fees up to a certain amount. For more information please contact the MNDA Communication Aids Coordinator communicationaids@mndassociation.org  or the MND Connect helpline: 0808 802 6262.

For people who are self-funding and need to purchase a microphone the website of their chosen voice banking company will advise on suitable ones to use. As a rough guide they cost about £30-40 and can be obtained e.g. from Amazon.
