Buckland Day Hospital Falls Group

The aims and objectives of the group are to:

  • Decrease the likelihood of falls by increasing muscle strength, improving balance, stamina, vestibular function & co-ordination.
  • Increase understanding of reasons why people fall and to offer education in improving lifestyle / health.
  • Empower participants to increase their independence.
  • Educate participants what to do in the event of a fall.

The falls group will run over 6 weeks with between 6-8 participants per group. The group will be run by Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and Nurses and will be held in the Physiotherapy Gym at Buckland Hospital.

 An eligibility criterion includes:

  • Independently mobile with / without walking aid.
  • Not hard of hearing
  • MMSE – greater than 8/10
  • Generalised fallers
  • Medically fit
  • Able to tolerate 2 hours of education / exercise
  • Motivated for session.

 Educational discussions will include:

  • Reasons for falling

  • Hazards in the home
  • Foot and eye care
  • Coping strategy and backward chaining
  • Diet

Each individual will be assessed individually prior to attending the group and also when the group ends. A home exercise programme will also be given to the participants.

The falls group will be re-evaluated periodically to ensure that it meets clinical standards set by NICE guidelines. Participants will also be offered a review appointment 4 months after the group ends to reassess their mobility and function. 

If they are not eligible for the group and still require treatment aimed at reducing falls, they may benefit from treatment on an individual basis

Patients will be encouraged to make their own way to the Day Hospital. Transport is available on a medical need only basis.

Referrals will be accepted on the referral form.
