Buckland Day Hospital Multiple Sclerosis Exercise Group

Aim:

To provide a Physiotherapy based exercise group for MS patients who are compliant and benefit from exercise. To assist in maintaining mobility, balance, strength and general fitness of patients who have been assessed by a Physiotherapist at the day hospital. The group will be reviewed by staff accordingly to assist with developing the group to patients needs

Objectives:

  • Improve compliance with home exercise program

  • Increase motivation to exercise

  • Improve/maintain functional mobility and independence.

  • To measure outcomes pre-post exercise group. To include Berg balance, 3 meter TUAG and 10 meter walk.

  • To progress individuals exercises as able

Criteria:

  • Independently mobile with/without a walking aid

  • Medically stable

  • Compliant with exercise.

  • Non-disruptive in a group setting. 

  • To have been assessed/ reviewed by a qualified Physiotherapist who have completed outcome measures in either Berg Balance / 3m TUAG/ 10 Meter walk and who feel would be suitable to attend the MS exercise group.

The Group:     

  • To run on a Wednesdays for a 6 week block

  • A maximum of 6 patients can attend
  • Ran by a Physiotherapist and Physio tech
  • The group will consist of a group warm-up, floor based work and cool down which will include relaxation.

  • Outcome measures will be recorded in the 5 th or 6 th week. These will include Berg balance/ 3M TUAG / 10 Meter walk

  • Patients will be supplied with an exercise program to continue with at home.

  • It will be decided on an individual needs basis if a patient requires a review by a qualified therapist after they have completed the group, or whether they will be discharged if managing independently.

In the event of a therapist being on leave and another therapist is unable to cover the group, the group will be cancelled.

Facilities and Equipment required:

  • Physiotherapy gym

  • Chairs with arms

  • Mats

  • Towels

  • Access to water fountain

  • MS information booklets to be available

  • Exercise Referral Scheme information to be available.
