What do we do?

We offer a flexible, friendly rehabilitation service for adults from 18 years onwards. The Shepway Day Hospital is based at the Royal Victoria hospital, Folkestone.

Our team

Our Multidisciplinary Team consists of a:

  • Nurse

  • Occupational Therapist

  • Physiotherapist

  • Speech and Language Therapist.

Who do we treat?

We treat a range of conditions which include:

  • Balance problems
  • Falls
  • Neurological conditions; Stroke, Parkinson's Disease, MS etc
  • Vestibular conditions; BPPV, dizziness etc
  • General rehabilitation following long hospital admission or periods of immobility etc

About our service

We only operate one day a week on a Monday. For more intense rehabilitation programmes patients needs may be best met at one of our other day hospital departments at Buckland Day Hospital, Dover or Ashford Day Hospital, William Harvey Hospital.

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy at the Shepway Day Hospital offers a range of interventions which include:

  • Treatment

  • Education

  • Advice.

The Physiotherapist aims to restore, maintain and improve a person’s function and movement.

Treatment interventions can include:

  • Facilitatory techniques of normal movement to increase function e.g. transfers, mobility, upper/lower limb function etc
  • Exercise based ; balance, strengthening, core stability, and cardiovascular work etc
  • Vestibular assessment and specific treatments; Dix-hallpike, Epley’s maneuvers etc
  • Provision of walking aids and gait re-education indoors / outdoors
  • Joint working with the Orthotist

Occupational Thearapy

Occupational Therapy enables individuals to take part in activities of daily living that they need or want to do. Occupational Therapy at the Day Hospital also work collaboratively with carers / family where appropriate to overcome the difficulty they have as a result of illness, disability and barriers in their environment.

Treatment interventions can include:

  • Cognitive rehab
  • Functional activities
  • Home Visits
  • Splinting pre/post BOTOX therapy
  • Provision of equipment and adaptations
  • General advice to increase patients functional independence and activities of daily living

Speech and Language Therapy

The Speech and Language Therapy Service at Shepway Day Hospital offers:

  • Assessment

  • Differential diagnosis and management of acquired swallowing

  • Speech, voice and language difficulties which may be the result of Stroke

  • Parkinson’s Disease

  • Multiple Sclerosis

  • Huntington’s Disease

  • Motor Neurone Disease

  • Cerebellar Ataxia and a number of other acquired neurological conditions.

Nursing

The role of the nursing team within the Day Hospital is to provide nursing assessment and management, working collaboratively with the other members of the MDT.

The nursing team consists of a

  • Sister (not on site)

  • Staff Nurse

  • HCA.

We also provide nursing support forspecialist out patient clinics including Parkinson’s disease, TIA/Stroke and Falls clinics.

Links

We have close links with the falls consultants, Multiple Sclerosis Nurses and Parkinson’s Disease Nurses.

We can work collaboratively with other departments which can include

  • Orthotics

  • Neuropsychology

  • Hydrotherapy

  • Social Services

  • Intermediate Care Teams
