Children and Young Peoples'                Musculoskeletal (MSK ) Physiotherapy Service 

Our team provides a physiotherapy led, Outpatient Service for Children and young people aged 0-16 years. We specialise in the assessment and treatment of a range of conditions that affect growing bones and muscles.

Common conditions include:

  • Growth-related conditions such as Osgood Schlatters, Sever’s
  • Bone or Soft tissue injuries
  • General muscle and joint aches and pain


Your treatment may include:

  • Home exercise programme, including stretching and muscle strengthening
  • Education on conditions, and advice on self-management
  • Core stability and balance work
  • Gait re–education
  • Sport specific rehabilitation
  • Specific therapeutic exercises and posture education.
  • Gym groups
  • Aquatic therapy
  • Serial Casting – calf muscle stretches using plaster casts


We also provide more specialist clinics, for complex patients, led by our Advanced Practice Physiotherapists (APP).

  • General MSK Clinic -These clinics offer specialist assessment. This may include the request of specialist investigations, where appropriate, for general MSK conditions. This Service works closely with local Orthopaedic Surgeons and with other Children’s Orthopaedic Services.
  • Ponseti clinic – This is a specialist assessment and treatment service for children born with structural foot deformity. Conditions seen include clubfoot (congenital talipes equino varus), congenital vertical talus and metatarsus adductus, as well as other foot deformity. This Service works closely with the Ponseti Service based at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.

  • Baby / under 5’s Clinic – This clinic offers specialist assessment of infants and young children with conditions affecting their hips (DDH), feet (Talipes) and head/neck (torticollis and plagiocephaly)

Paediatrics MSK Physio

Outpatient clinics are held throughout the week, led by physiotherapists and sometimes physiotherapy assistants and students may be present.

We provide treatment within a variety of different settings including:

  • Individual sessions
  • Gym sessions (hospital gymnasium)
  • Aquatic Therapy sessions (In a small heated pool)

The William Harvey Physiotherapy Department provides the following Group sessions:

  • Under 10 years Gym session
  • Over 10 years Gym session
  • 30 minute Aquatic Therapy sessions
Swimming pool

The Kent and Canterbury Physiotherapy Department provides the following Group sessions:

  • 30 minute Aquatic Therapy sessions
  • Under 10 years Gym session
  • Over 10 years Gym session
