This is a specialist area of urology which deals with diseases and conditions specific to men. It pertains to the anatomy, functions, and disorders (such as infertility or impotence) of the male reproductive system.
We offer a comprehensive service for patients who have erectile dysfunction and other andrological conditions including:

Erectile dysfunction
This is an inability to either develop or sustain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse. It is common and often very distressing. It may be due to medical conditions such as diabetes or following surgery for cancer.
ED is more common than most people think. Data from the USA suggests that, at the age of 40 years, almost 40% of men have some degree of ED. The overall prevalence of ED in non-institutionalised men aged 40 to 79 years was found to be 52%.

Insertion of penile prostheses may be considered in patients who do not respond to first- and second-line treatments, or in men who are seeking a permanent solution. Penile prostheses come in two basic forms:
INFLATABLE
Can be inflated or deflated "on-demand"
MALLEABLE
Permanently semi-rigid but "bendy"
Implantation of prostheses should be regarded very much as a "last resort". The erectile tissue within the penis is destroyed during implantation of the prostheses, so the procedure should be regarded as irreversible.
The main risks of the procedure are infection and mechanical failure.
Ejaculatory disorders including premature ejaculation
This is an abnormality of the expulsion of semen. It is a very distressing condition and is probably the most common sexual dysfunction in men.
Penile curvature
This condition is either present lifelong (congenital penile curvature) or may develop over time (Peyronie’s disease). Peyronie’s disease is due to scarring of the tunica albuginea thereby creating a plaque.

Clinical Nurse Specialist Wendy Muir runs an Erectile Dysfuction service at QEQM on a Thursday and at the Derry Unit Folkestone on a Wednesday Contact the Urology Suite; Derry Unit. The Derry Unit is based at Royal Victoria Hospital in Folkestone. It is a diagnostic outpatient department offering the same facilities as the Urology Suite at Kent and Canterbury Hospital.
