Stone Disease

Our Stone Disease team specialise in the removal of kidney stones. We perform various procedures to ensure a safe removal, including Extracorporeal shockwaves lithotripsy (ESWL), Ureteroscopy & Laser Fragmentation and  Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL).

We provide Emergency Stone Care at our Kent and Canterbury Urgent Care Centre.

We also have a special online tracking system and database which keeps us informed about the patients who have stents inserted and when they need to be changed or removed.

You can find out more about kidney stones, including their symptoms and causes, on the NHS website.

Our Renal/Kidney Stone Unit provides support for patients with renal stones, and associated problems.  It is a high volume service offering all modern forms of treating complex stone disease with a dedicated operating theatre for patients with stones.

The service includes:

  • Weekly Multidisciplinary Stone Meeting
  • Management of all types of kidney and ureteric stones
  • Strictures of the ureter (narrowings of the tube that links the kidneys with the bladder)
  • Upper tract transitional cell carcinoma (TCC). This is a type of cancer that is found on the inside lining of the kidneys and ureters
