Stroke prevention

Many strokes are related to disease in the arteries of the neck (carotid arteries). Early intervention is vital in preventing future strokes.

Our unit is a leading centre providing Rapid Access Carotid Endarterectomy (RACE). This surgical procedure depends on rapid imaging and early intervention in patients who are at risk of stroke. Our unit is one of the country’s leading centres in both waiting times and quality of treatment.

Aortic Aneurysm

An aneurysm is a swelling of an artery, which continues to expand if left untreated. Aneurysms of the aorta, the main blood vessel in the body, are not uncommon and may pass unnoticed until they rupture.

The conventional treatment is open surgical repair. In recent years, aortic aneurysms have been treated by a minimally invasive technique where a graft is inserted through the arteries in the groin.  This technique, known as EVAR (EndoVascular Aneurysmal Repair), has significant benefits in suitable patients.

Peripheral Vascular Disease (PAD)

Peripheral Arterial Disease refers to the development of narrowing and blockage of the arteries of the limbs.

Your risk of vascular disease increases if you are a diabetic. You also increase your risk of developing PAD if you have high blood pressure, if you smoke, don't exercise, are overweight or eat a high-fat diet.

PAD can lead to pain in your legs when walking or foot sores. In severe cases if dead tissue develops, called gangrene, it can lead to infection and ultimately amputation.

East Kent Vascular Centre is a centre of excellence that specialises in the management of peripheral vascular disease. We offer a broad range of procedures to help restore circulation to the legs and avoid amputation. These include:

  • Vascular bypass surgery

  • Endovascular procedures – angioplasty and stents.
