Critical Care at East Kent Hospitals

The William Harvey Hospital is a Level 2 Trauma Centre, and the Kent and Medway centre for pPCI and major head and neck surgery, meaning the Critical Care team care for a wide range of patients.

A large proportion come to the unit after suffering an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest and in cardiogenic shock, allowing our clinicians to use their strong clinical expertise in echocardiography and point of care ultrasonography. We have close links with the cardiology department including regular joint meetings to review patient care and processes.

The team see a lot of patients following major head and neck flap surgery, including management of difficult airways, requiring close teamworking with colleagues in anaesthetics and head and neck surgery.

We have a burgeoning research portfolio, and have been involved in a number of Covid-19 trials, including RECOVERY, as well as other high-profile national studies including FLO-ELA, CIRCA, and STARRT-AKI.

Colleagues are also able to run their own in-house research with the support of our research and innovation team, and in collaboration with our local universities and the Kent and Medway Medical School.

The unit is equipped with the latest technology, including state-of-the-art echocardiography equipment and training facilities and Intellivent Adaptive Support Ventilation.

Two of our consultant intensivists are Focused Intensive Care Echo (FICE) supervisors and set up and run an in-house FICE course which has received excellent feedback. Five or our consultants are FICE mentors, and we have successfully supported multiple trainee doctors through their FICE accreditation.

The junior doctor rotas contain trainees from multiple specialties, and we have accredited  educational and clinical supervisors for trainees in intensive care medicine, anaesthesia, ACCS and core medicine.
