Making a difference to junior doctor wellbeing, together.

Burnout in junior doctors is well documented, and commonly associated with physical and mental health issues. This can contribute to long-term, work-related absences, people choosing to leave medicine and - most tragically - some junior doctors choosing to end their lives. It is imperative that junior doctor welfare is considered and protected.

Introducing Holding Hands - a local forum that brings together junior doctors within a department in monthly meetings to discuss:

  • day-to-day challenges at work
  • non-clinical problems
  • plans for solutions to overcome these issues
  • specific training requirements.

This meeting is also an opportunity to celebrate individual and group achievements (especially our EPiC awards), and plan department socials.

Departments involved

  • Paediatrics
  • Neonatal

...more to be announced!

So far, this has been very positive, with those who are attending sessions developing greater feelings of community within the department, and participants feeling more supported within their team.

"I like catching up with colleagues over a slice of cake and getting things off my chest."

"Thank you. It's nice to know that someone cares."

"It's a shame that bleeps aren't being held and people have to leaving during the meeting."
