Many staff across the renal multi-disciplinary team are research active, and Dr Tim Doulton is NIHR CRN:KSS specialty group co-lead for renal disorders research. As well as participating in many NIHR Portfolio studies – both commercial and academic across the range of kidney conditions and treatment modalities – we have a diverse portfolio of locally-led studies and regularly present our results at national and international meetings.

Areas of local interest and expertise include the epidemiology of acute kidney injury (Professor Chris Farmer, Dr Mike Bedford, Dr Helen Hobbs & Dr Paul Stevens); chronic kidney disease (CKD): the ATTACK study (Aspirin to target arterial events in chronic kidney disease, Dr Paul Stevens); measurement of kidney function  (eGFR-C and others, Dr Edmund Lamb); CKD associated bone disease (ALPHA, Dr Michael Delaney); using machine-learning to improve the quality and efficiency of CKD care (Professor Farmer); isometric exercise and hypertension (Isofit, co-led by Prof Farmer & collaborator Dr Jim Wiles from Canterbury Christchurch University; supported by Dr Tim Doulton).

The team have had many notable successes over the past 15 years including numerous academic grants (e.g. £2m from NIHR for eGFR-C) and being 3rd highest recruiting site in UK to the PIVOTAL Trial in dialysis patients (https://kidneyresearchuk.org/2019/04/01/management-of-anaemia-kidney-research-uk-and-vifor-fresenius-medical-care-renal-pharma/).

Mention should, of course, be made of our Research Friends and all of our research participants who have so generously given of their time to better understand kidney disease for future generations.
