Work experience at East Kent Hospitals

Please note: Work Experience is currently on hold.

East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust (EKHUFT) offer work experience/open days in the following disciplines:

  • Nursing
  • Medical Experience
  • Midwifery
  • Radiology
  • Child Health
  • Physiotherapy/Occupational Therapy
  • Speech & language Therapy
  • Medical Physics

Although we are able to offer some work experience placements across East Kent Hospitals, due to the high demand from college/sixth form students and independent candidates, we will not be able to provide placements for all.

We recognise the importance that work experience can have in shaping future career pathways for students and independent applicants. If we are unable to offer you a work experience placement, we suggest that you consider the options listed below.

 Please note: Not all of the specialities below offer work experience for all disciplines

  1. Nursing homes
  2. Residential homes
  3. Care homes including learning disabilities
  4. Children's nurseries
  5. GP surgeries
  6. Community Health Trusts - This will include district nursing, health visiting, schools nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, dietetics.
  7. Hospices
  8. Prison services
  9. Home care service providers

These areas can offer similar 'caring' experiences to working in EKHUFT and meet the evidence required on UCAS application forms.

Adult Nursing

Criteria for eligibilty:-

  • Work Experience in adult nursing are offered to individuals over the age of 16
  • Demonstrates a genuine interest in pursuing a nursing career.
  • Preferably lives within East Kent.
  • Working towards A/Levels or healthcare qualification
  • Can demonstrate enthusiasm, motivation and a professional attitude.

Medical experience placements

Midwifery 

Open days available usually about 2-3 times a year, depending on demand and is held in the Education Centre at WHH.

Criteria for eligibility:-
  • Applied for the midwifery degree or those students who are thinking about it
  • Those who would like to know more about the role of the midwife within EKHUFT

Radiography/Radiology (Medical Imaging)

Criteria for eligibility:-

  • Must be aged 18 or over
  • Only one day work experience is available
  • Work experience is purely observational
  • These days are primarily designed to fulfil the requirement of experiencing the work of a radiographer for those applying to study diagnostic radiography at university.

Child Health (paediatrics)

Criteria for eligibility:-

  • Must be aged 18 or over
  • Play specialist role only
  • Preferably take from local schools
  • Must demonstrate a passion for Nursing

If required for University application, you need to have some experience of working with children. Where possible, this needs to be in a health care or similar environment and full details of this should be in your personal statement. You need to be able to say how through this experience what insight you have gained into the role of the children's nurse and working with children and their families. Relevant experience can also be obtained through volunteer placements.

Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy

Our Physiotherapy teams offer two days' work experience at the Kent and Canterbury Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Queen Mother or the William Harvey Hospital, Ashford.

Criteria for eligibility:-

  • Year 12 and 13 students (or equivalents) who wish to read Physiotherapy or Occupational Therapy at University.
  • Must be aged 16 or over
  • Must have Physiotherapy as first choice for attendance on the Physiotherapy Open Day at Kent and Canterbury or for work experience at William Harvey Ashford.
  • Must have OT as first choice for OT work experience.
  • Preferably live in east Kent.
  • Must have or be studying towards A- levels (or equivalent) that fulfil the entry requirements for Physiotherapy or Occupational Therapy.

 Speech and Language Therapy

Criteria for eligibility:

  •  One day work experience available only
  • Must be aged 18 or over (after 18th Birthday)
  • Must be serious about speech and language as a career path. For example, undertaking a SLT degree, applying for university or postgraduate studies.
  • Must live in catchment area – live or be studying in the east Kent Area

Medical Physics

Criteria for eligibility:-

  •  Four places every year to those who are interested in pursuing a career in physics or engineering
  • Offered in May and September only

IT

Criteria for eligibility:

  • 1 week work experience available
  • 4 places every year
  • Must be aged 16 or over
  • IT can offer experience in all aspects of IT by offering the students the chance to spend a day in each of the teams.
  • Students should have an interest in technology.
