Work experience information

Nursing (adult)

Limited numbers of work experience placements are offered within nursing environments. Ten placements will be offered on a first come first served basis twice a year during the months of April and August.

Medical experience placements

 Work experience placements are only offered through the MedStart4U programme which includes work experience block weeks (available for over 16s only), for further details of the MedStart4U programme please contact Jane Richens: jane.richens@nhs.net 

However, MedStart4U is not due to be running again till next year (2019) so please check back for further updates.

Midwifery

Open days available only and NOT work placements.

Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy

Our Physiotherapy teams offer open days and work experience for Year 12 and 13 students (or equivalent) who wish to read Physiotherapy or Occupational Therapy at University.

Child Health (paediatrics)

Criteria for eligibility:- 

  • Must be aged 18 or over
  • Play specialist role only
  • Preferably take from local schools 
  • Must demonstrate a passion for Nursing  

If required for University application, you need to have some experience of working with children. Where possible, these need to be in a health care or similar environment and full details of this should be in your personal statement. You need to be able to say how through this experience what insight you have gained into the role of the children's nurse and working with children and their families. Relevant experience can also be obtained through volunteer placements. 

Dieticians

Criteria for eligibility:-

  • One day job shadowing ONLY

For graduates, there are a number of 2 year conversion courses to qualify as a dietician. Normally, applicants for these courses need a degree in a related subject, which contains biochemistry and human physiology. A biomedical science degree should be acceptable. Some universities do offer undergraduate courses in Dietetics. 

Speech and Language Therapy

Criteria for eligibility:- 

  • 1 day work experience available only 
  • Must be aged 18 or over (after 18th Birthday) 
  • Must be serious about speech and language as a career path. For example, undertaking a SLT degree, applying for university or postgraduate studies. 
  • Must live in catchment area – live or be studying in the east Kent area. 

Radiology (X-Ray department)

Criteria for eligibility:-  

  • 1 day work experience available only 
  • Must be aged 16 or over 
  • Work experience is purely observational 
  • These days are primarily designed to fulfil the requirement of experiencing the work of a radiology department for those applying to study radiography at university.

Cardiology

Criteria for eligibility:- 

  • Can offer 2/3 day’s work experience at WHH or QEQM
  • Clinical – observation only
  • Non-Clinical - administration 
  • Must be aged 16 or over ( If wish to experience the labs, will need to be 18+)  
  • Must have a keen interest and be applying for university
