Deal ward nurses celebrate winning Nursing and midwifery category

Published 16 June 2022

Nurses at QEQM Hospital’s Deal Ward have been crowned regional winners in The NHS Parliamentary Awards for the Nursing and Midwifery category.

Nominated by Sir Roger Gale MP, the award recognises nursing or midwifery teams who have used their skills to ensure that patients experience excellent care and compassion.

Stacey Perry, Ward Manager, says: “We are over the moon to be recognised with this award. The team work so hard and really care about making improvements for our patients. I’m really proud of our team and can’t thank them enough for all they do.”

Inspired by the Trust’s ‘We Care’ improvement programme, Stacey Perry brought together nurses, healthcare assistants and therapists to understand why some patients were falling while in hospital, and to identify how they could reduce the number of medical emergency calls.

Both have significantly reduced thanks to improvement initiatives designed and led by the team.

These include grouping patients at risk of falling in the same bay with a nurse always present. The nurse wears a yellow tabard to alert staff not to ask them to undertake other duties outside the bay. Patients reported they felt safer as a result.

The NHS Parliamentary Awards recognise the massive contribution made by those who work in and alongside the NHS.

Launched in March, MPs were asked to find and nominate those individuals or teams they believe have made the biggest improvements to health services in their constituencies, across 10 categories.

As a regional champion staff from Deal Ward will attend the national awards ceremony on Wednesday 6 July in London when the national winners will be announced.

Deal Ward is one of ten winners across the South East, which exemplify the best of what the NHS and its partners do day in, day out.
