The first patients were treated in a major new-build expansion of the William Harvey’s Emergency Department (ED) this week.

The outstanding expansion to ED contains 12 rapid assessment bays, nine resus bays, dedicated areas for patients with mental health needs and a large new ambulance entrance.

Sarah Shingler, chief nursing and midwifery officer, said: “This significant expansion will give our patients, visitors and staff a bigger, better and safer environment and I’d like to thank everyone for their support with this exciting development and patience during this first phase of the build.”

The second phase of the department’s transformation starts next month, when extensive renovations within the existing department get underway to further improve facilities for patients, visitors and staff.

Dr Hitendra Tanwar, clinical director for urgent and emergency care, said: “This is excellent news for patients and staff as it will help us see and treat more patients in significantly improved surroundings.”

Rosalyn Little, operations director for urgent and emergency care, at WHH, said: “There has been a tremendous amount of hard work involved in getting this fantastic new unit ready for our patients.

“Particular thanks to teams across the Trust and 2gether Support Solutions including the ED leads, procurement, EME, IT, facilities, capital projects and strategic development teams, and construction partners Bauvill.”

The first phase of a major transformation of the ED at QEQM Hospital is approaching completion, with large new treatment areas for adults and children, and dedicated staff facilities.
