Philippa welcomes baby Rosie, thanks to help from WHH team

‘Dedication’ of staff helped me to start my family

16 January 2018

Just like many other couples looking to start a family, Philippa Wilson and her husband Paul were scared and excited at the same time when Philippa first fell pregnant in 2013.

Paul was in the army at the time and was stationed in Germany. In fact, the couple had been living there for a while and had been trying for a child for three years with no luck. Then suddenly, with no medical help, along came their first child who they named Amelia.

Sadly, in the time following this, Phillipa suffered three miscarriages.

The good news is that with the help of Mr Abhi Shah and the Gynaecology Assessment Unit (GAU) at William Harvey Hospital, they now have another baby girl called Rosie, who will be one in April 2018.

However, Philippa believes that if it wasn’t for the investigative work and dedication from Mr Shah and the GAU team, she would still be having pregnancy problems now.

After she experienced her miscarriages, Mr Shah insisted on deeper investigations into why these were happening. Philippa felt that having access to the new GAU helped her a great deal by providing a dedicated unit which is focused on a one-stop assessment, diagnostic service for women with gynaecological problems.

“The surroundings are sensitive and private and the service is provided by a skilled and appropriate team of staff,” she said.

“Mr Shah and the team carried out tests for endometriosis and polycystic ovaries and then discovered I was low in Progesterone. I believe that it’s due to the existence of the GAU that my case was investigated so well and the problem was discovered,” she added.

Progesterone is one of the hormones in our bodies that stimulates and regulates various functions. It plays an important role in maintaining pregnancy and is produced in the ovaries, the placenta (when a woman gets pregnant) and the adrenal glands. It helps prepare your body for conception and pregnancy and regulates the monthly menstrual cycle.

“When I was referred to Mr Shah, I was so pleased because he was really down to earth and welcoming and insisted that he would get to the bottom of my problems. Mr Shah wrote me a prescription for Progesterone and not long afterwards I was told I was pregnant again and along came Rosie.”

“These kinds of medications weren’t available through my GP, so having Mr Shah and his team’s support was essential in helping us to have healthy and happy children,” she said.

“The good news is that Paul and I are now expecting our third child – a boy who is due in April 2018.
To say we are over the moon is an understatement– particularly as I am once again under the care of Mr Shah and GAU team!”
