Urology

Clarke Ward is the dedicated urology inpatient ward in the Trust and is located at Kent and Canterbury Hospital, Canterbury. It has 36 inpatient beds with an additional admissions area where patients are prepared for theatre and where possible patients are encouraged to walk to theatre from the admissions area.

The Ward Manager is Alex Trad. There are four junior sisters that support the delivery of care to patients that are admitted to the ward. Clarke Ward has emergency admissions as well as patients for planned surgery. The Matron for Clarke Ward is Lorraine Crick.

We have a dedicated Urology Urgent Care Centre at Kent & Canterbury Hospital.

The Urology Department has two dedicated outpatient units. One is at Kent and Canterbury Hospital and is called the Urology Suite. The other is at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Folkestone and is called the Derry Unit.

These units offer bespoke urological services and include nurse-led clinics.

The Urology Rapid Access Pathway is a service through which GPs can refer patients who have suspected urological cancers.

The Surgical Pharmacy team working in Urology is part of the Pharmacy Directorate for East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust, which provides a range of services throughout the Trust​.

Both men and women can suffer from bothersome urinary symptoms. This may be having to pass urine more frequently or with difficulty, or having urine infections. We have set up a dedicated service for the assessment and treatment of people in these situations.

The Robotic Urology Services offers da Vinci Robotic Surgery for a host of robotic urological procedures including robot assisted radical prostatectomy, robot assisted radical cystectomy, robotic pelvic lymph node dissection, robotic partial nephrectomy, robotic pyeloplasty and selected functional procedures including robotic ureteric reimplant and diverticulectomy.

The unit was among the first few in the country to initiate robotic surgery and is recognised as a high volume centre. It has performed over two thousand procedures to date. It is one of only five in the country recognised by The Urology Foundation as a Fellowship Training Centre.

Clinical Nurse Specialist Wendy Muir runs an Erectile Dysfuction service at QEQM on a Thursday and at the Derry Unit Folkestone on a Wednesday Contact the Urology Suite; Derry Unit.

The Derry Unit is based at Royal Victoria Hospital in Folkestone. It is a diagnostic outpatient department offering the same facilities as the Urology Suite at Kent and Canterbury Hospital.
