Blood Tests (Phlebotomy)


Blood tests are now by appointment only for all patients. Unfortunately, we are no longer able to offer a walk-in service.

We offer a Phlebotomy (blood test) service to adults and children 5 years of age and older.

Patients referred for a blood test by their GP can attend our clinics.

Please note that we will not process samples where the patient and the requester are the same individual (self-requests) or are in a close personal relationship (family/friends). All NHS staff should be registered with a GP outside their own family. Please see Trust policy on sample and request form acceptance.

Laboratory opening times for the delivery of samples: Monday - Friday 8am - 8pm

Appointments for a glucose tolerance test are made via Ambulatory Care following request received directly from the GP.

Please ensure you bring your form with you at the time of your blood test. Failure to present this form may result in your test not being done and you having to return at a later date.

Find us

Walk to the rear of the outpatients department (on extreme right as you enter the hospital complex from Ethelbert Road) and turn left into the main hospital corridor (named 'Main Street'). The Pathology department is situated at station 7, approximately 100 yards on the right hand side.

From the 1937 building (main ward area on left hand side of hospital complex) turn right and walk down link corridor past the casualty and fracture clinic area. At the extreme end of the corridor take lift or stairs up to the next floor. Turn right into main corridor and pathology is approximately 20 yards on the left hand side (location 7).

Phlebotomy opening times: Monday - Friday 8.30am - 5.00pm. 
Laboratory opening times for delivery of samples: Monday – Friday 8am – 8pm, Saturday 9am - 12pm If you are a patient requiring a GTT (Glucose Tolerance Test ) fasting blood test, then please ring 01233 616060 and select option 1 to make an appointment. On arriving in the department it will not be necessary for you to take a ticket, just take a seat and your name will be called.

Please ensure you bring your form with you at the time of your blood test. Failure to present this form may result in your test not being done and you having to make a return visit.

If you are a patient requiring a GTT (Glucose Tolerance Test ) fasting blood test, then please ring 01843 235000 (lines open Mon-Fri 9am-5.30pm) to make an appointment. On arriving in the department just take a seat and your name will be called.

Find us

From the main St Peters Road entrance, enter through the doors into the main hall. Turn right and follow corridor to the end. Turn left and follow corridor round to the right and then left at the end of the corridor. The phlebotomy suite is on the right and pathology reception on the left.

From the new outpatient unit, enter through the main doors and go through the doors on the left near the seating area. Either use the lift to go up one floor or walk up the stairs. Go through the double doors at top of the stairs and follow corridor right and then left. At the end of the corridor the phlebotomy suite is on the right and pathology reception on the left. 

From the Ramsgate Road entrance, go through main doors and walk down to the corridor. Lifts and stairs are situated at both ends of the corridor and use either to go up one floor. Once on the upper level turn left and follow corridor round to left. Follow corridor until the end (pass restaurant on right). Turn left and travel for approximately 100 yards passing through the main hall and into the outpatients' area.

Opening times - Monday - Friday 8.00am to 3.45pm (Please note - opening and closing times may vary on occasion)

If you require a Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT) then please call 01304 222552 during the opening hours to make an appointment. On arriving in the department take a seat and your name will be called.

For all blood tests please ensure you bring your form with you at the time of your blood test. Failure to present this form may result in your test not being done and you having to make a return visit.

If you require a Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT) fasting blood test then please call 01303 854484 Monday - Friday between 10.30am and 12 midday to make an appointment. On arriving in the department take a seat and your name will be called.

Find us - On entering the walk in centre, turn left and walk ahead through double doors to waiting area.
