What we do

Our major trauma service cares for people who have been so badly injured that their lives could be in danger. For example, after a car crash.

We make sure patients get the right immediate help in the emergency department. This includes arranging for them to go to specialist doctors in London, if they need special treatment. We also make sure important tests and operations are given at the right time, to help people survive their wounds.

Our trauma teams work together to help patients recover their strength. They include:

  • nurses

  • coordinators

  • physiotherapists

  • therapists.

We also work with the Citizens Advice team, who support patients and their families, who may find life harder if someone is not able to work while they are healing.

How to use this service

You will not have an appointment with our service. You will only see us if you suffer a serious injury and have to phone 999. The ambulance service will bring you to our hospital. Sometimes patients are also brought to us by family members (especially children) through the emergency department.

Our major trauma service will work with the emergency department, surgical, and anaesthetic teams to provide the care your injuries need.

If you have been flown or driven to London after your injury by the ambulance service, we will welcome you back to our hospitals for your rehabilitation.

Where do we provide this service?

Our services are available at:

Sometimes it may be beneficial for a patient to move sites to get specific care. Otherwise, as much as possible, we try to keep our patients close to home and near their families.

The major trauma unit at William Harvey Hospital is one of the busiest trauma units in the UK. It is a key part of the SELKaM Major Trauma Network.
