Fracture Clinic - Virtual (VFC)

What we do

Our Virtual Fracture Clinic (VFC) allows specialist doctors and nurses to review your fracture or minor injury virtually, using your X-rays and clinical notes.

Some fractures can heal without medical intervention. The virtual clinic means you will only have to come to the hospital if we need to see you.

How it works

You can be referred to our VFC after a visit to an emergency department (ED), urgent treatment centre (UTC) or your GP.

  1. You have an X-ray or scan taken

  2. Our orthopaedic team review your images and notes

  3. You will be contacted either by phone, letter, or secure online message with your diagnosis, advice and next steps.

We aim to contact you within 72 hours after you attend ED, UTC or your GP. Please make sure we have your current contact details. You can add or update your contact details on the NHS website.

Possible outcomes

When we contact you, you will likely be given one of the following options:

  • We do not need to see you, and your injury can be managed at home with our advice

  • We need to see you face-to-face, and you will be invited to an appointment

  • We need you to have more tests, which you will be invited to attend.

Looking after yourself at home

Please follow the advice given on rest, pain relief, or supports such as slings.

If you experience any of the following, please contact NHS 111, UTC or GP immediately:

  • Pain or swelling gets worse

  • Your limb swelling is excessive and compressed by the plaster cast

  • Fingers or toes feel numb or are unusually very pale or blue

  • If you are concerned about your injury.
